37% of Revenues of Japanese IP-themed Mobile Games Come from Oversea Markets

In Feb 2023, research firm Sensor Tower released a report titled "Japanese Mobile IP Game Insights in Overseas Markets in 2022".


Here are some key takeaways.


  • From 2019 to 2022, nearly 37% of revenue from IP (copyright) games for Japanese smartphones came from overseas markets.

  • Nearly 40% of the top 100 overseas revenue rankings from January to November 2010 came from the US market. The Chinese and Korean markets also recorded the second-highest revenue after the US market.

  • Regarding the number of downloads, results from the Latin American and European markets stood out.

  • Niantic's mobile game "Pokémon GO" maintained the top position in Japan's mobile IP game overseas earnings ranking, making Pokémon the most profitable Japanese IP overseas.

  • From January to November 2010, Pokémon GO's revenue surpassed $570 million, accounting for more than 23% of the total overseas revenue of all the Japanese mobile IP games.

  • Dragon Ball's overseas earnings are the second highest after Pokémon, with "Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle" and "Dragon Ball Legends" ranking in the top 10 of revenue rankings for at least three years. As of November 2010, cumulative global revenue of Dragon Ball titles exceeded $5.14 billion, of which nearly 50% was from overseas markets.
